Springtime in the Palouse
"Springtime in the Palouse"

This photograph was taken at first light in the Palouse country of eastern Washington. The rolling hills of the palouse were created thousands of years ago by glacial flooding. It is now farmland that hosts wheat and other crops. In this photograph, the crop is sprouting throught the soil. That is what is causing the green and brown textures. The low angle of the sun lights the crop on the ridgetops and creates shadows in the valleys. This interplay of light is what gives the photograph its shape. In fact, this photograph is about shape. I like the little white barn in the photo. It anchors the image and gives it a sense of scale and reality. Otherwise, the photo would be totally abstract.
