This shot of a thunderstorm at sunset was shot in southwest Montana near the small town of Avon. I was driving up Montana Hwy 141 during a very intense thunderstorm. At sunset, the sun dropped into a gap between the clouds and the horizon, lighting the landscape with incredible amber light. I pulled over, got out my 35mm camera and tripod, and looked for something to photograph. I decided to photograph the rainbow and as I began to compose a picture lightning struck. I decided to try to photograph the lightning. The key to photographing lightning is a very slow shutter speed, which means you need a low light situation and slow speed film. When your shutter is open for several seconds, there is a better chance that lightning will strike while you are exposing your film. I composed the scene and started clicking away, hoping lightning would strike while the shutter was open. I shot about 30 to 40 images and I got a few with lightning in them. This image was the best.
